Dave's Computer Notes

Various hints, tips and notes that come from messing around with comnputers too much.

Palm C Stuff

I recently bought a Palm Tungsten C. This was as a replacement for an aging Psion Seris 5 which doesn't easily interface with a Mac, and which lacks any modern support or facilities. The main attractions of the T|C were the WiFi and the thumbpad keyboard. I really do type much faster than I write, and am pretty suspicious of hand-writing recognition.

My experience so far has been pretty positive. The Graffiti2 handwriting 'recognition' is actually not that bad, but I remain faster on the keypad.

As to WiFi, its great fun cruising around looking for hotspots with NetChaser (link needed here) and then connecting to public networks for browsing etc.

There have been some odd problems though.

After getting back from the US the WiFi appeared to stop working. The device would still see networks, but lost the ability to connect to them even when I had set them to be completely open. The net of a million lies turned out to be my friend.

After searching on such keywords as 'Palm C wifi connections' and similar, I eventually found the answer on a Brighthand (link needed) discussion forum. It turns out that some hidden files had become corrupt, possibly as a result of NetChaser use, and needed to be deleted. To do this you need FileZ (link needed) or a similar utility that allows you to see and delete hidden files. You then need to delete the following items:

WiFiProfile

WiFiDB

I did that, and it magically started working again!
